This week's book: "Atomic Habits" by James Clear.
"You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems."
James Clear
This week's book is one of my all-time favorites, and I've been looking forward to sharing it with you.
Here's the numbers on it, because they're staggering: over 20 million copies sold, translated into more than 60 languages, and around 325,000 Amazon reviews averaging 4.8 stars. Books simply don't do that. There's a reason this one did.
The whole idea is wonderfully simple. Becoming a better version of yourself doesn't require blowing up your entire life. It just takes small improvements, that you repeat consistently, until they manifest into something remarkable. Clear isn't asking you to reinvent yourself overnight. He's showing how getting just a little better each day eventually leads to enormous change.
Here’s an example. I've got a friend who wants to lose 25 pounds, it is overwhelming for her, like a mountain she can't climb. But if she loses just one ounce a day, that's more than 22 pounds in a year. One ounce. That's skipping a cookie, or a handful of chips. Suddenly the mountain is just a series of small, doable steps.
That's the magic of this book. It takes big, intimidating change and breaks it into pieces so small you can handle them easily. Build momentum. Momentum creates possibilities.
And here's the line that reframes everything: you do not rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your systems. We all have goals. Everyone wants to be healthier, wealthier, kinder, better. But goals aren't what get you there. Your daily systems, the small things you actually do, over and over, are what determine where you end up. The goal is the destination. The habit is the car driving you there.
Here's the promise for the week: by Saturday you'll have Clear's four simple rules for building better habits, an honest look at what works and where I'd add a wrinkle of my own, and at least one small change you can start today, whatever "better" means for you.
Quick question to start the week: what's one small habit that, if you actually stuck to it, would change your life over a year? Hit reply, I read every one.
I'll go first: mine is this newsletter. Writing most days, even when I don't feel like it. No single day moves the needle much. But I'm betting a year of them will build something real. That's my idea in live action.

Next week we're reading "Hyperfocus" by Chris Bailey, a practical, science-backed look at managing your attention in a world so full of distraction. If you like to follow along, now's a good time to grab a copy so it's on your shelf by Monday. Forgot to order in time? The Kindle version is instant.
